We were planning a photo shoot with Summerlander Johanna, when we heard about Lars and Noak – two exchange students from Scandinavia. We thought it would be fun to include them in our shoot and to get their take on being with the Rotary Youth Exchange Student Program. Rotary sponsors programs in 100+ countries for students to learn about other cultures and improve their English.

Lars and Noak became instant friends after meeting at a Vees game. Even though Swedish and Norwegian are different languages they are similar enough that the two could easily understand each other.

Considering Johanna whose family heritage goes back many generations in Germany and the fact that the orchardists who lease the Trout Creek orchard are from India, it seems that this unique town of Summerland is a melting pot of different and fascinating cultures and interests.

One of the boys strongest memories will be the special bond they’ve formed. Apart from that they are very appreciate of the opportunity provided to them by the Rotary Club.

Noak – Sweden

“For me, a trip to Canada means that I will properly learn another country’s culture fully, since I’ll be here for a year but also I will grow as a person myself. Why is Canada a great choice? Because of a few things, such as  learning English, hopefully get in a lot of skiing and I also did not want to be so mainstream and go to USA. Meeting new friends here such as Lars and other Canadians has been very important for me so far since I am always doing things and so I won’t have any homesickness. Because of Rotary I can experience almost anything I want. Skiing, snow shoeing, camping etc. I am very thankful to be a part of Rotary!”

Lars - Norway

"I was very excited when I found out I had been chosen by the Rotary Cultural Exchange Program to come to Canada. It is obviously a bit nerve-racking to do the exchange and I sometimes miss my friends and family, but it is amazing to come to Summerland and experience a whole new place. I have made so many new friends, it is especially nice to meet other people doing the exchange as well since it can sometimes be stressful and therefore you have friends that are experiencing the same thing to help you along. The friends I’ve made during my time here so far have definitely made the trip much more fun and interesting. Thank you Rotary for this experience!”
